Climate change is more and more complicated and has caused lots of negative impacts on the environment in aquaculture. Quảng Ninh’s farmers are turning to high tech agirulture to lower reliance on the weather or season.
Models following VietGAP standard, greenhouse culture, Biofloc technology and multiple stage culture have been multiplied by farmers. Whiteleg shrimp farming models in Quảng Yên, Đầm Hà, and Móng Cái are roll models with the average output ranging between 8 and 10 tons/ha/crop, especially some models producing 20-25 tons/ha/crop. Besides, there have been some facilities rearing shrimps in greenhouses with high productivity irregardless of low temperature and rainy days.
Farmer Nguyễn Văn Dũng in Bình Ngọc commune of Móng Cái city have tried with whiteleg shrimp intensive farming since 2021. On the first crop, he harvested nearly 10 tons of commercial shrimps from a 0.6ha pond and earned nearly VND 600 million profit. This model has been kept and multiplied so far by him because in his opinion, intensive shrimp farming has lots of remarkable advantages as compared to extensive farming.
The experimental model of mobile nursery tank applied in two phase whiteleg shrimp culture developed by the Quảng Ninh provincial Agriculture Extension Center is one of the effective models. A mobile nursery tank is easily managed, flexible, does not depend on water resources and farming season, and can eliminate natural disasters and disease outbreaks. This model can help control the water environment and reduce the EMS syndrome.
Many farmers are applying the multiple stage shrimp culture system which consists of ponds, nursery tanks, and grow-out ponds of commercial shrimps. The Tân An Seafood Company has 20ha of aquaculture, with 10ha used for whiteleg shrimp culture following three stage technology and super-intensive practice. The annual output is 600-800 tons of whiteleg shrimp on average. In the 2021 winter crop alone, the Company stocked 40 million post larves and started to harvest the adults in late December 2021. It is estimated that they could earn 140-160 tons of shrimp and supply the domestic market mainly.
The super-intensive shrimp farming areas are being built in Đầm Hà district, with the main species being whiteleg shrimps, mollusks, and saltwater fishes. The project of producing whiteleg shrimp broodstocks by Viet Uc – Quang Ninh in 2021 has been considered a successful model with 1.2 billion broodstocks being delivered from Quảng Ninh to Quảng Bình. The Company is building an experimental farming area of broodstocks in a low temperature which can be adaptable to the Winter in northern provinces.
Deputy Director of the provincial Department of Agriculture and Rural Development Ngô Tất Thắng said that the fisheries sector has been suffering from the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic and climate change. In 2022, the fisheries industry sets a target of achieving 152,700 tons of seafood, with 68,700 tons of wild caught species, down 8.72%, and 84,000 tons of farmed species, up 12.58%.
